Things Get Tougher For Pakistani Artistes

Monday, 23 January 2012

Things Get Tougher For Pakistani ArtistesPakistani’s artistes in India, be it it Salma Agha in the 1980s or Zeba Bakhtiar in the 90s, or Meera, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and now Veena Malik in present times, have always been controversy’s most beloved children.

But now with the latest entry into the convent of controversies Veena Malik pulling out all stops, the future of Pakistani artistes in India seems seriously jeopardized.

With Veena Malik’s Swayamvar now on hold, the most immediate casualty of the damage suffered in the Indo-Pak cultural ties is a big new music contest show Sur Kshetra helmed by the maverick music producer Gajendra Singh.

Apparently the show’s plans to bring a number of very prominent Pakistani musicians to India has gone for a toss, post Veena’s multiple controversies.

Says a source close to the ambitious show, “Sahara One’s entertainment head-honcho Boney Kapoor and Sur Kshetra producer Gajendra Singh were all set to bring a number of Pakistani stalwarts to India for the show. Atif Aslam did come down to India for a brief visit.

But there were plans to get several other stalwarts of the Pakistani-Bangladeshi music industry , among them Runa Laila, Abida Parveen, Ghulam Ali, down to India for the show. ”

These plans have hastily been dropped. The show would now be recorded completely in the no-man’s land of Dubai. According to earlier plans the venue for the show was both India and Dubai with musicians from both Pakistan and India involved in a free-flowing stream of merging talent.

But now bringing a large cartel of Pakistani musicians into Mumbai seems, in the words of a source from the show, “suicidal”.

When contacted Gajendra Singh said, “Yes, the show is going to be recorded exclusively in Dubai. Some Pakistani artistes who come to India for short-term publicity damage and negate the humble effort I’ve been making for the last three decades to better cultural ties between the two countries through music.

I don’t believe there’s a better tool than songs to bring India and Pakistan together. But every time a controversy like the one with Ustad Fateh Ali Khan or Veena Malik happens, we move back many steps.

There are good times for Indo-Pak relations. And there are bad times. I’d say we’re currently at a low ebb in our relations with our neighbours. And some of their artistes who are coming to work in Mumbai, are not helping the cause. ”

While Gajendra Singh goes mum on the issue after the above outburst a source close to him reveals that procuring visas for Pakistani artistes had gotten even more difficult in the past few weeks.

Says the source, “Non-controversial artistes like Ali Zafar and Atif Aslam are embarrassed by the antics of their colleagues from their mulk. But there’s little they can do except look the other way. ”

One of the most prominent musicians from Pakistan admitted on the assurance of anonymity that he is “appalled” at the conduct of some Pakistani artistes.

“Hum yahan pe mehmaan banke aate hain. Thoda to halaat ke nazaakat ki izzat rakhni chahiye, ” said the singer.

No Salman was my boyfriend: Ameesha

No Salman was my boyfriend: AmeeshaAmeesha Patel talks about her new role as producer, her career mistakes and writing a special role for Sanjay Dutt

How do you like your new role as a producer?
I love it because I know I can still be the diva, an actress and I have somebody here doing the dirty work (laughs).

I don't have to be at every meeting because I trust Kuunal.

You have opened the production house Ameesha Patel Production with your best friend, Kuunal Goomer. Is it a good idea to mix business with friendship?
While I was apprehensive about starting my business ventures with my other friends, with Kuunal I knew it would only grow into something better.

After God if I trust someone it is Kuunal. It was his dream to start this production house.

He felt that I was wasting my education and I needed to do more with myself.

Both the directors you have signed Priyadarshan and David Dhawan didn't have a good run at the box office, recently.
But they have also given 40 hits. We are honoured to have them on board. Being in this industry for 12 years, I have gone though the valleys and the peaks and seen the cyclical changes.

When Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan can be written off, who are we? Therefore, we don't judge anyone from their last hits and flops.

Will you act in all your home ventures?
Yes, because I am young, pretty and a good actress. But our doors are open to all the talented actors.

I am also working in movies outside my home production like Race 2, Shortcut Romeo, Bhaiyyaji Superhit with Sunny Deol.

Will your good friend Sanjay Dutt act in your film?
My production house would be incomplete if Sanju was not part of it. Even if he is not on the mind of any director, we will make sure that there is a special role written for him.

How do you react to your detractors who say that Ameesha has opened her production house because no one else is giving her work?
Is it easier to go get work or to get hundred crore to fund yourself?

You think you got your due as an actor?
Not at all but I will get it now.

What went wrong?
I did not have brains and circumstances did not allow me to take my career in the right direction.

I was not a filmy kid and I came around the time when all the star kids including Kareena and Hrithik were being launched.

I had to crawl while they were already running. I am still from outside and I don't have a godfather.

I did not even have a filmy boyfriend to push me for roles. No Salman was my boyfriend, no Akshay Kumar, none of them. Even Kuunal is from the non-filmy background.

Who is your Prince Charming?
After some terrible mistakes I am still waiting for my Prince Charming. I have never changed men to suit my career. I am a sucker for love.

Will you be able to convince your friends like Hrithik and Shah Rukh who are very busy to work in your films?
So many producers want David Dhawan and Priyadarshan but we managed to rope them. Likewise if we have a role for Hrithik or Shah Rukh we are confident enough to get them.

"It feels great that I have lost so much of weight even after eating fish curry and rice every night. People ask me - 'Are you seriously eating carbohydrates at night as you still look so fit?'.

I just tell them that after having a baby, it is important to have carbs. It is about eating healthy and being fit and not about starving yourself," she added.

Did Gauri snub Priyanka?

Apparently Mrs Khan looked the other way when PC greeted her in Macau

Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra

Since the last few months tongues have been wagging about Priyanka Chopra’s close friendship with her ‘Don’ co-star Shah Rukh Khan. The grapevine even said that Gauri wasn’t too pleased with Priyanka’s open declaration of affection for her husband. Now, there is more proof that there is tension on the PC-Gauri front.

Sources say that during the recently held Zee Cine Awards in Macau, King Khan’s wife snubbed Priyanka openly. The actress had flown straight to Macau from Dubai (where she promoted ‘Agneepath’) and once she reached there, she got down to rehearsing for her awards act right away.

Insiders reveal that Priyanka, who was hosting the awards with Shah Rukh, rehearsed with him from nine in the night to six in the morning. Both were accompanied by their sets of friends though Shah Rukh had Gauri for company too.

Seeing Shiamak Davar who was choreographing the entire act and giving instructions to his dancers, Gauri went up to him to say hello. When Gauri came on stage Priyanka walked up to her and greeted her but was shocked when the former completely ignored her. Apparently, she just stood there with her hands to her back and continued talking to Shiamak.

But if Priyanka was flustered by the rejection, she didn’t show it at all and continued with her rehearsals with Shah Rukh. We would love to know what the ‘Don’ had to say to this entire episode!

Ranbir’s dangerous stunt

He performed an action scene all by himself for ‘Barfee’

Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor has wowed critics time and again with stellar performances in films like ‘Rockstar’, ‘Rajneeti’, ‘Wake Up Sid’ and others. His next much-awaited film is Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfee’ where he reportedly plays a handicapped person. But sources said recently Ranbir did something that surprised all those present on the sets – he carried out a dangerous stunt all by himself. Taking inspiration from Akshay Kumar, are you Ranbir?

The scene that was shot in Kolkata had Ranbir running from the police. It required him to do stunts on the rooftops of the city jumping from one to the other, with a gap of eight feet to 10 feet between them. Normally such scenes are performed by stuntmen and the makers had hired a body double for Ranbir too. But the young Kapoor, who was keen for some action, went ahead and did it himself. Needless to say, the entire unit was full of praises for the star.

‘Barfee’ which stars Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D'Cruz alongside Ranbir, is scheduled for a July release this year.

Shahid Ranbir clash yet again

This time Sasha has opted out of Ranbir’s world tour

Shahid Kapoor
Shahid Kapoor

Some time back we told you how the two young Kapoors of Bollywood – Shahid and Ranbir were vying for the same role in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s ‘Chitiyan’. Nobody knows what exactly transpired but Ranbir stepped out of the film leaving the field clear for Shahid.

However, now the reverse has happened. Shahid has opted out of Ranbir’s world tour that is scheduled to be held this August ostensibly because his next film with director Maneesh Sharma has been pushed ahead by six months.
This puts Ranbir in a quandary once again as his much-anticipated world tour that included about 16-odd concerts across the US and some European cities has been getting postponed for one reason or the other. Sasha was supposed to join Ranbir for the tour after wrapping up his film that was start shooting from February and end by July. However, his director Manish Sharma suffered a slipped disc because of which the schedule had to postponed.

Well we all know how stars ‘adjust’ their dates when they really want to be part of a film. Is Shahid using this well-worn excuse to wriggle out of Ranbir’s tour deliberately?

Ranbir says no to Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Has Shahid got something to do with it?

Ranbir Kapoor
Ranbir Kapoor

After ‘Rockstar’, everyone wants a piece of Ranbir Kapoor. And one filmmaker who had become his fan was Vidhu Vinod Chopra who wanted to cast him for ‘Chithiyan’. In fact, ‘Chithiyan’ was in the news since it was launched as it was rumoured that Ranbir was competing with arch rival Shahid Kapoor for the role. However, as it turns out, the ‘Rockstar’ Kapoor is no longer doing the film leaving the field clear for Shahid!

According to reports, apart from Shahid-Ranbir, Sharman Joshi, another actor who is Chopra’s favourite, had been finalised to play one of the leads in the film.

Interestingly as things stand now, Sharman is the only one who has signed on the dotted line while the hunt is on for the male lead. Apparently, Chopra had met Ranbir in Los Angeles recently and had even narrated the script of ‘Chithiyan’ to him but nobody knows what transpired between them for Ranbir to refuse the film. Some people also believe that this film is not on Chopra’s priority list currently as he is busy with ‘Ferrari Ki Sawaari’ and will focus on ‘Chithiyan’ only in July 2012.

A source close to Chopra confirmed that Ranbir was not doing the film because of ‘date issues’. Well, is that an age old excuse to avoid controversy or is there more to it than meets the eye?

I am ready to host a reality show

Sabyasachi Mukherjee talks about his foray into TV and designing for Oprah Winfrey!

Sabyasachi with Oprah Winfrey at his store in Mumbai

Sabyasachi with Oprah Winfrey at his store in Mumbai

Sabyasachi Mukherjee is on cloud nine. And why shouldn’t he considering that his new store launched recently in Mumbai and his first customer was none other than talk show queen Oprah Winfrey! Sabya dressed Oprah for the Jaipur Literary Fest as well as for her royal visit with the Maharaja of Jaipur and his wife.

The designer who will be in Dubai in the next few days for a trunk show at the Raffles Hotel spoke exclusively to Masala.com.

Who are your style icons?
Frida Kahlo and Coco Chanel

What do you foresee as the hottest and the worst trend in Indian fashion this year?
Hottest trend – definitely monotones! There was too much contrast and too many busy patterns last year. I think people are ready to go back to simple monotone styles. The worst trend was definitely gota and Swarovski or a combination of both. Bling will be too much this year. Even the Anarkali will be revamped to a simple rustic organic look.

What are projects and things you would like to work on but just don’t have the time to do?
Describe a typical day in your life.
Yoga, newspapers and a hot cup of tea in the morning and then designing at my workshop all day – provided there are no shoots, events, store launches happening!

What do you do to de-stress and unwind?
Reading, listening to music and travelling whenever I feel like it. The latter is the window for the mind. Fortunately, in my trade, it is a great investment.

Which international designers inspire you?
I really like Dries Von Norton because I don’t think of him as a commercial designer but as an ideal artiste. He creates in his own way rather than flowing with the tide which is remarkable considering the commercial pressures of the ever-changing and demanding world.

Tell us all about your new and exciting collection ‘Peeli Kothi’.
‘Peeli Kothi’ which is the heart of the Benarasi weave revival belt, brings forth the portrait of the frugal Indian family. So you have vintage brocade saris worn with high-neck Tagore blouses, ornate sherwanis thick with silver embroidery worn with gherawala angarkha for men, luxurious velvet saris for women and children in austere black khadi dresses worn with salwars and khadi dupattas. These frames of almost royal opulence and frugality highlight the inspiration from ‘pre-Partition India’ of princely states and poor people.

Which Bollywood/Hollywood celeb would you like to style?
Vanessa Paradis

What do you think about Dubai as a fashion hub?
Dubai is such a cosmopolitan city. It has a great mix of local, European, American and Asian cultures. It’s reflected in the fashion; everything from American sportswear brands to Indian high-end couture is available here. If I had to describe Dubai from a fashion perspective in one word, ‘glamourous’ comes to mind.

What do you love most about Dubai and what are your must-visit places when you are in town?
I love the food and shopping here. My favourite places are Souk al Bahar and definitely Souk Madinat. I love Marina Furniture, and all the restaurants dotted around the Souk. They have a great vibe and really authentic feel.

What is your design philosophy?
What gets reflected in my designs is my passion for textiles and colours and everything handmade. I have always believed in the power of the hand over machine. Though technology can make production bigger and faster, it cannot really touch you. That is why modernism gets outdated very fast. On the other hand, anything crafted manually might be slow and have irregularities yet it lends a characteristic to every product that makes it the ultimate state of luxury.

What style elements did you keep in mind when styling Aishwarya in ‘Guzaarish’?
When Sanjay gave me the brief for Aishwarya’s role, I was told she was a lonely women with a colourless life. I imagined that a women such as her with a dull life and a difficult role as a caregiver would fill her time by stitching and embroidering. Sometimes when women are unhappy they tend to overdress or undress to fill the void. I imagined that she would constantly try and bring colour to her life through her clothing and make up – which is what I kept in mind. I had mixed reviews for ‘Guzaarish’ but in general most people loved Ash’s look and more specifically the jewellery.

Are there any other Bollywood movies you plan to or would like to work on in the near future?
I have designed for Vidya Balan in ‘Kahani’ which will release soon.

What is it about your collection that makes it appealing to women of all generations?
I design timeless Indian clothing. My style is more tradition and less fashion, hence it is very appealing to all women.

What’s one fashion investment a woman should make this season?
Vintage gold and a hand embroidered shawl or dupatta.

What are your plans for the future?
I want to start an Indian inspired kidswear brand which can be globally aspirational. Since I hail from an art background, I am very keen to curate and commission art. I have already started the process through my Design Studio in Kolkata.

If you weren’t a fashion designer, what career path would you have chosen?
I would have been a horticulturist or a restauranteur specialising in Bengali food.

Tell us one thing that people don’t know about you.
I’m about to host my very first Indian reality TV show. We will give brides a makeover and an opportunity to wear a Sabyasachi Bridal creation.

Tell us more about your directorial debut. Where does the project stand as of now?
My plans are currently on hold for another one or two years. I feel that with my business growing and the new stores in Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi, I haven’t had a chance to focus on it. I have a script ready though! In fact I just launched my new store in Mumbai a few days ago and my first customer was Oprah Winfrey!

Shahid Kapoor out of Ranbir's world tour

Shahid out of Ranbir`s world tourShahid Kapoor has opted out of Ranbir Kapoor's world tour this August, as his next film gets pushed ahead by six months

Ever since its conceptualisation, Ranbir Kapoor's world tour has been in one problem or another. And now Shahid Kapoor has opted out of the tour, preferring to first finish his next film with director Maneesh Sharma.

Sasha was supposed to join the Rockstar actor in a series of 16 odd concerts across US and some European cities this August.

Sharma's next that was earlier scheduled for February end/ early March has been pushed back to mid-August. Reason: The director has suffered a slipped disc and has been advised rest till July.

Our source says, "Initially, Shahid was to start shooting from end February-early March, and wrap it up by July. That's why, when the Moranis, the organisers of Ranbir's world tour, approached him he agreed to be part of it."

However, late December the director suffered a slipped disc. "Since Shahid is first committed to this, he can't shoot for it and join Ranbir on the world tour at the same time, " revealed our source.

When contacted, the spokesperson at the production house behind the film declined to comment on Shahid being a part of their production helmed by the Ladies vs Ricky Bahl director, but confirmed the latter's back problem.

"Maneesh has a back condition. He's following his doctor's advise of taking it easy and resting, " the spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, now Shahid isn't too pleased to see his work calendar empty till August. So he's asked his business manager to fix up narrations with some of the directors whose scripts he's considering.

"So from the three-four scripts he was contemplating doing after Maneesh's film, one will be finalised at the earliest."

Soha Ali Khan finds it hard to say sorry to boyfriend

Soha Ali Khan finds it hard to say sorry to boyfriendActress Soha Ali Khan, who has guarded her relationship with Kunal Khemu well so far, made a candid confession by saying that she feels reluctant to accept her mistakes, and say 'sorry', while Kunal feels possessiveness in every relationship is important.

"I am very proud and find it extremely difficult to say the word 'sorry'. I usually end up arguing a lot in the bargain," Soha said while playing peacemaker between a couple for an upcoming episode of UTV Stars' "Superstar Santa".

"In fact, in our relationship, I have said the least number of 'sorries' as compared to Kunal. But it's something I'm working on...I'm learning to say 'sorry' more often to Kunal," she added.

To which Kunal, who was present on the show too, said: "Aha...finally you admit! And this time on national television."

The duo, who has featured in films like "99" and "Dhoondte Reh Jaoge", has dodged the cameras for a long time, but this will be one of their rare appearances together on the small screen.

Kunal feels to sustain any relationship, it is important to be possessive about each other.

While hearing out the woes of the female on the show, he told her: "If you aren't possessive at all about your lover, then there is reason to be worried. It just goes to show that you don't really care."

"Superstar Santa", which deals with issues relating to friends, families and romantic relationships, features celebrities solving the issue at hand.

Tabu takes Salsa lessons at 40

Tabu takes Salsa lessons at 40Actor takes classes from Sandip Soparrkar to explore the fun side of 40

The elusive Tabu is expanding her horizons. Tired of her serious image, the actress wants to have some fun. Action plan No 1 is to get rid of her image as the sombre girl with two left feet.

Tabu has actually decided to do something about her dancing skills, or the rumoured lack of them. She has enrolled into dancer-choreographer Sandeep Soparrkar's dancing school to learn Salsa, ballroom dancing and other forms of contemporary dance.

Says a friend of the actress, "Tabu has always been a fun person. She has been unnecessarily saddled with this image of being serious. Tabu loves to dance. She has been doing so for years. Lately, she has decided to learn dance professionally."

When we contacted Soparrkar, he was hesitant to discuss Tabu's dance lessons. "She has taken some lessons, " he admitted.

"Then she stopped due to her travelling schedule. She's very good at dancing, she doesn't have two left feet at all. I suggested she explore her dancing skills in films, but Tabu dances to relax. She has requested that her visits be kept away from the public eye."

Interestingly, Tabu put forward a fine display of her dancing skills early in her career in Vijaypath. Remember Ruk ruk ruk?

Thereafter she was saddled with the image of a no-nonsense woman. We'll probably see her hitting the night spots of Mumbai more frequently now.
