Missing Veena Malik never left India

Monday 19 December 2011

`Missing` Veena never left IndiaPakistani actress Veena Malik was reported to have gone missing. While a Pakistani website said she had returned home, her manager denied this, saying she is still in India.

He also clarified that this was not a publicity stunt for her forthcoming reality show.

The 33-year-old went missing since Friday morning and Geo TV reported Veena entered Pakistan through the Wagha border in Punjab on Friday. The also report said she was clad in a burqa and her passport bears her real name Zahida.

"Veena never left the country as she was busy shooting for (her debut movie) 'Zindagi 50-50'. It was just that on 16th of this month she got to know that she is getting some time off from the shoot, so she planned to spend some quality time with herself, " manager Pratik Mehta told on the phone from Mumbai.

Mehta said she changed her location and switched off her mobile phone, which had created some panic.

"She changed her hotel to Oakwood and also also kept her mobile phone off during the entire period so I was not able to contact her. She was going through such a tough time after all those controversies (related to her nude photo shoot FHM magazine) that she thought of rejuvenating herself, " he said.

"This was not at all a publicity stunt as many are saying. People can't even imagine her situation. She is pressurised from everywhere -- from her family, the Pakistani government and the moral police. This is why she thought of keeping herself under wraps for some time, " he said.

Veena hogged the limelight after she testified against her boyfriend, Pakistani bowler Mohammed Asif, alleging he was involved in match fixing. She became popular after her stint in the fourth season of reality show "Bigg Boss". She was denounced by Islamic clerics for her nude photos in the FHM magazine.

The actress is set to have her 'swayamvar' on the Imagine TV channel.

Rakhi Sawant says Katrina copies her dance moves

Rakhi Sawant says Katrina copies her dance movesRakhi Sawant, perhaps true item-girl in Bollywood today, alleges that actress Katrina Kaif has copied her antics in her "Chikni Chameli" act in "Agneepath" remake.

"I think 'Chikni Chameli' is a good song. Katrina has danced very well but it's not something new. I have already done all this before. You can watch all my songs, I have already done that," the 33-year-old controversy queen said here at the Big Stars Entertainment Awards.

"I have done this in 'Dekhta hai tu kya' and she did this in 'Shiela ki jawaani'. In 'Chikni Chameli', she is again following me.

It seems Katrina really likes me...It's alright if someone wants to follow me and dance," added Rakhi, who did a cameo in a few films before featuring in a full-fledged item number "Chura liyaa hai tumne" in 2003.

Rakhi hasn't got any awards so far. When asked about it, she compared herself with Aamir Khan, though in a light-hearted manner, and said: "Aamir and I are similar. Neither he gets awards, nor do I. But we have won the heart of India and we do not need an award."

The loud-mouth actress, who has dabbled both in television and films, was last seen on the big screen in an item song in "Loot". On small screen, she hosted the reality talk-show "Ajab Desh Ki Ghazab Kahaaniyan".

Salman Khan should be titled hit Khan

Salman should be titled hit KhanFrom He-Man to funny man, from flamboyant to sombre - Bollywood's top notch actors have shone on the silver screen in various avatars and also kept the cash registers ringing. We list the top 10 actors of the year:

1) Salman Khan: He should be titled hit khan. If Bollywood's knight in shining armour bailed the industry out in 2009 and 2010, he boosted the box office business this year too with "Bodyguard" and "Ready".

In both, neither the content was premium, nor were the performances superlative, but what helped the actor stand out were the big bucks his films yielded at the box office, strengthening his position as a bankable star.

2) Aamir Khan: What one missed in Salman Khan's films was prominently present in Aamir Khan-starrer "Dhobi Ghat". Aamir wowed his fans as a lonely painter in the directorial debut of his wife Kiran Rao, who deftly handled a bouquet of stories, travelling across various sections of society in the lanes and bylanes of Mumbai.

The actor had just one release, that too, consciously designed for niche audiences, but everyone eulogised it, saying, "Wow! What a performance! What an actor!"

If that were not enough, Aamir was admired for daring to produce adult comedy "Delhi Belly" and the film's success further strengthened his image in volatile Bollywood.

3) Ranbir Kapoor: If his great grandfather, grandfather and parents are admired and respected for their cinematic genius, Ranbir Kapoor has proved that he is a true torch-bearer of the Kapoor khandan.

The youngster excelled in his only release "Rockstar", which was marred by a bad script. His role required a range of emotions and he stood out in every scene and kept the audiences hooked.

4) Shah Rukh Khan: Romance is his forte! But this time Shah Rukh Khan donned the garb of a superhero in "RA.One" to woo his fans.

Though the film was not appreciated much for its content, his fans liked him as a geek scientist and as a superhero. He also earned praise for the use of technology, innovative marketing and promotional techniques to promote his product.

5). Amitabh Bachchan: Retirement? No way, says Big B. Instead he is grabbing central roles at the age of 69 and this year too he came out with two films "Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap" and "Aarakshan" - as different as chalk and cheese.

If the former saw him as a flamboyant underworld don, the latter featured him as a college principal fighting for the rights of students.

In terms of business, neither were money spinners, but as far as acting is concerned, Amitabh is Amitabh. He was terrific in both the roles and critics gave him a thumbs up.

6) Farhan Akhtar: When there is a huge star cast, it is not easy to make an impression. But Farhan Akhtar did that in "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", which also starred Abhay Deol and Hrithik Roshan. The art of acting is all about sensitivity, emoting, feelings -and Farhan got them all right.

7) Hrithik Roshan: Usually seen in over-the-top roles, Hrithik Roshan for the first time did a role that was slightly offbeat and closer to reality. If "Kites" didn't allow him to fly high in the sky, his performance in "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" helped him unleash his potential as an actor.

8) R. Madhvan: An NRI, who belongs to a middle-class family, returns home to find a wife. He encounters a drunken girl, who is not interested in marrying him.

But her spirit is such that he falls head over heels in love with her and it becomes heartbreaking for him to let her go with some other guy. Madhavan not only suited the role, but he revelled in it, earning plaudits from both critics and fans.

9) Abhay Deol: He emerged as the dark horse. Be it a doomed lover in "Dev D" or a smart thief in "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye", he has effortlessly carried his roles in the past. He continued his winning streak as a confused lover in "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara".

10) Saif Ali Khan: This Khan showed his sparks in "Omkara" and after that he embarked on a journey that showed his versatility. This year he had just one release in "Aarakshan", which was not a super hit, but the film's box office performance didn't overshadow Saif's work.

Critics felt he scored very highly in sincerity, subtlety and sheer screen presence as a Dalit boy in the movie, highlighting the reservation issue.

Top 10 Hotties: Vidya leads Bollywood's female pack

Top 10 Hotties: Vidya leads Bollywood`s female packWomen-centric themes added power to the Bollywood platter this year and the leading ladies impressed with their boldness and intense acting. Actresses like Vidya Balan, Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif gave the industry's menfolk a run for their money.

We list the top 10 actresses who swept the audience away in 2011:

1. Vidya Balan: She started the year with a stellar performance as a deglamorised, strong-willed simpleton in the real-life inspired "No One Killed Jessica", and featured in cameos in "Thank You", "Dum Maaro Dum" and Malayalam film "Urumi".

But for the 33-year-old 'bombaat' actress, 2011 ended with a bang with her sizzling portrayal of a dancing star, Silk, in "The Dirty Picture". Vidya explored new realms to her acting potential, and emerged as a winner, overshadowing other commercially hit Bollywood divas.

2. Kareena Kapoor: Two films and both hits! Even after over a decade, Kareena stood out among her contemporaries with the record-breaker "Bodyguard" opposite Salman Khan, and Shah Rukh Khan's mega-production "RA.One". She also proved her dancing mettle once again with "Chammak challo", which went on to be a huge chartbuster.

3. Priyanka Chopra: After an average 2010, Priyanka Chopra sprang back into action by carrying out seven different looks in Vishal Bharadwaj's critically-acclaimed "7 Khoon Maaf".

In the character of a serial spouse-killer, Sussanna, the actress has displayed why she is a National Award winner at such a young age. She will round up the year as Shah Rukh Khan's 'junglee billi' in the much-awaited "Don 2: The King Is Back".

4. Katrina Kaif: As a free-spirited, independent girl in the multi-starrer "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", as a sexy item girl in "Bodyguard" or as the effervescent Dimple Dixit in "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan", this Britain-born girl has been proving her range with every passing year.

5. Kalki Koechlin: With four diverse films -- "Shaitan", "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara", "That Girl in Yellow Boots" and "My Friend Pinto" - Kalki has been on a roll this year!

Her easy and fluid portrayal of a mentally disturbed girl, a nagging girlfriend, a girl in search of her father, and a lost girl abandoned by her boyfriend, have reassured cine-buffs of her capacity as a new age, commercially-viable actress, who dares to choose different roles.

6. Kangana Ranaut: Year 2011 saw Kangana in a new avatar. As a bindaas Kanpur girl in "Tanu Weds Manu", she gave her most desi performance ever.

She followed it up with the role of a cop in "Game", a supporting act in comedy films "Double Dhamaal" and "Rascals", and featured in "Miley Naa Miley Hum", which went unnoticed. However, Kangana's standing in the industry remains quite unaffected.

7. Rani Mukerji: Her fans got a treat after two years when Rani returned to the big screen in "No One Killed Jessica". As a bold journalist, who gets the public together to demand justice for a cause, Rani delivered an image-breaking performance when she mouthed expletives and smoked a cigarette for the role.

8. Anushka Sharma: There's something that clicks about this Yash Raj Films find, despite average earners like "Patiala House" and "Ladies VS Ricky Bahl" in 2011. Anushka's vivaciousness, million-dollar smile and perfect dancing skills have catapulted her into the league of promising leading ladies of tinsel town today.

9. Deepika Padukone: At 25, Deepika has established herself as one of the more popular female stars of Hindi cinema. This year she strengthened her stance, not so much with her performances, but because of the elan with which she carried out the sultry song "Mit jaaye gum"; as the small town but confident girl in "Aarakshan"; and as the love interest of John Abraham in "Desi Boyz ".

10. Mahie Gill: Her films, "Utt Patang", "Not A Love Story" and "Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster" this year didn't mint enough money at the box office, but her performance, like always, was well noticed. The critically acclaimed actress continues to choose films away from tried-and-tested formulas, and garners appreciation galore.

Male egos making Bigg Boss house dreadful: Shonali Nagrani

Male egos making Bigg Boss house dreadful: Shonali NagraniModel-turned-host Shonali Nagrani, who was voted out of the "Bigg Boss 5", says clash of male egos has worsened the atmosphere inside the house.

"Amar (Upadhyay) and Sky (Akashdeep Saigal) are playing dirty games inside the house and I really don't want either of them to win, " Shonali told on phone after coming out of the "Bigg Boss" house.

"Ever since male contestants entered the show, the whole environment of the show turned negative because there were clashes of male egoes all the time, " she added.

The Colors show started off with 13 female contestants and Shakti Kapoor as the only male inmate. However, Amar Upadhyay, Siddharth Bhardwaj and Akashdeep Saigal entered the reality show hosted by Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt.

Shonali, who alleged Amar made advances at her, feels the actor is rude and selfish.

"He is a family man and I won't like to talk about that issue now. I feel I should have talked to him about it then, but as a girl I really didn't have the guts to go upto him and talk about it. But he is playing a dirty game and I don't have a respect for him. He is a very rude and a selfish man, " rued Shonali.

"I don't like people who play mind games. He is very calculative. He only thinks from his mind and not from his heart. In his mind games, he has hurt a lot of people. He is completely opposite of what Mihir was on screen, " she added.

As for Siddharth, she said: "He is a really good boy. He's a young blood. All the other contestants are 10-15 years older than him. Sometimes he looses direction because of the age, but he is indeed handling everything very nicely inside the house."

Shonali wants Juhi Parmar to win the show.

"I really want a woman to win the show and I wish Juhi emerges as the winner as she is a very positive and honest person and fights for truth. She might have been shown as an aggressive person in other reality show, but every human being has negatives and positives. I have a lot of respect for her, " she said.

However, Shonali admits her eviction has disappointed her.

"I have mixed feelings. At one point I am happy that I would be able to celebrate my birthday with my family, but at the same time I am disappointed as I wanted to stay inside the house for a longer time, " she said.

" 'Bigg Boss' has been a great platform for her and calls it a career boost. I discovered a lot new things about myself. The entire experience has helped learn how to tackle situations.

"Stay was very good and sort of satisfying. I made a couple of new friends in Siddharth Bharadwaj, Mahek Chahal and Shonali Nagrani. I learnt plenty of things like Indian style cooking, curries and spices. I learnt how to make rotis. Had a great experience living with Indian people and learnt how sensitive and passionate they are, " he said.

"I have learnt how important is your family, friends and simple things in life that we take for granted. It has made me appreciate what I have got, " he added.

Talking about Pooja Missra, who re-entered the house as Symonds' interpreter after her eviction earlier, Symonds said she didn't use her second stint in the right way.

"She had the opportunity to go back inside the house and rectify an awkward situation, but the way she chose to go about it was not sensible. I didn't want to cause any damage, but it is time for the truth. This woman got to realise and understand that you can't continue to do this (argumetns and fights), " Symonds told over phone from Mumbai.

He admits language was a problem, but body language helped him to understand people.

"It was difficult as I didn't know the language, but I could understand the body language. But when conversation used to go on, it was difficult to understand. The fights looked ugly. But you couldn't really control the disagreements, " he said.

Why did your chose to enter 'Bigg Boss'?

"I enjoy coming to India. I have a lot of good friends and I had lot of good times here in India. It was a more obvious place for me to do something like this because I have a connection with the country. It was a great experience and useful also. I would be coming back to India again for more cricket, " he said adding that he flying home to spend "Christmas with my family".

Lost and found: Veena Malik

The Pakistani actress was chilling in a Mumbai hotel which explains her ‘disappearance’

Veena Malik
Veena Malik

Veena Malik has pulled off another stunt. After being in the news for two days for ‘vanishing’ from the sets of her film, she has now been found’, safe and sound! The actress was staying in an upscale hotel in Juhu recovering from an illness.

Yesterday Masala! reported that Veena had mysteriously disappeared from the sets of her upcoming movie ‘Mumbai 125 kilometres’. Her vanishing act gave director Hemant Madhukar and her business manager Prateek Mehta quite a scare. Both of them claimed that they had been desperately trying to reach Veena but her mobile had been unreachable. A police complaint too was lodged thereafter.

But far from facing threats or being kidnapped, Veena in fact, was relaxing and recuperating at a hotel. Apparently, the actress had endured a gruelling shoot for the movie in which she spent nearly 18 hours in a bathtub. The water had been very cold and she fell ill. Veena then left the shoot, checked into a Juhu hotel and called a doctor. The doctor gave her a high dose of antibiotics which made her sleep for 30 hours unaware of the uproar her strange disappearance had caused.

It was even said that the 28-year-old Pakistani actress had left Mumbai in a burqa because her visa in India had expired. But as it turns out, all’s well with her world.
What’s your next stunt going to be Veena?

The very remarkable, Shabana Azmi
The very remarkable, Shabana Azmi

With just three days to go, the excitement is building up for the biggest night of the season, the Masala! Awards 2011. Today, we announce the recipients of one of the most coveted trophies – the Lifetime Achievement Awards. They are two stalwarts in their own right and here is their life story...

Maghanmal Pancholia
When Dubai was but a pearl diving village, Maghanmal Pancholia landed on our shores aboard a Chinese cargo ship from Karachi. Ever since, his journey has been extraordinary and one filled with tremendous adventure and success. Today, at 88, the man, who is lovingly called Maghaba, is respected and revered as one of the greatest contributors to the UAE from the Asian fraternity.

Much about his remarkable life has been revealed in his recently released autobiography Footprints – Memoirs Of An Indian Patriarch. Trials and tribulations marked his voyage, but with grit and determination, his modest business expanded and diversified beyond his own wildest dreams. As the Chairman of the M/S Maghanmal Jethanand and the Arabian Trading Agency companies, one of Dubai’s oldest business houses, today Maghanmal Pancholia, has seen, lived through and been a dynamic force of growth in Dubai’s metamorphosis from a modest trading centre to one of the world’s most magnetic metropolises.

Shabana Azmi
Shabana Azmi gives the word ‘bold’ a whole new definition altogether. She is known to make unconventional choices, in films as well as in life. At a time when the Hindi film heroine was all about being a glamourous appendage to the macho hero, Shabana dared to step into unchartered territory and create a whole new niche for herself, becoming one of the leading lights of the ‘parallel cinema’ movement. Her outstanding performance in films like Ankur, Nishant, Arth, Mandi to name just a few are still considered benchmarks for the current generation of actresses. To be ‘the Shabana Azmi of her generation’ is often a title most newbies aspire for.

Over the years, Shabana’s activism and outspokenness has won her a lot of admirers and detractors alike but she has never shied away from speaking her mind. This creative powerhouse’s contribution to cinema, theatre and social work continues to inspire millions of women the world over.

Ranbir makes Deepika feel special

No wonder she loves working with him

Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone may have long split with Ranbir and even taken potshots at him at every given opportunity, but when it comes to working together, the Bangalore girl has nothing but sweet words of praise for her ex-lover.

Recently, Deepika gushed about working with Ranbir in the upcoming movie ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani,’ directed by Ayan Mukherjee (‘Wake up Sid’) and produced by Karan Johar.
“It is indeed great to be back with Ranbir in a film. I have always wanted to work with such a brilliant actor like him and that too in a love story. Both of us were looking forward to a film that would justify our presence and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ has turned out to be one such film. This movie is really special,” added the 25 year-old actress.

“Moreover, the film is directed by Ayan who is our mutual friend. I pretty much knew that he had to do something special to bring us together on screen. I am ecstatic. This is going to be a true blue love story with old school romance,” she went on.

Padukone further claimed that she was really happy about Kapoor’s success with ‘Rockstar.’ “I know how excited Ranbir was when he started off in the industry. He puts a lot into his film and he is happy that his hard work has paid off.”

Deepika has always known to be diplomatic but is this gush-fest an indication that she wants to make amends with Ranbir?

Why Vidya said no to Rajni

The actress says she was never given a script for ‘Rana’

Vidya Balan
Vidya Balan

Vidya Balan is known for her fiery performances. Unlike other actresses, she doesn’t like being the glam doll whose only job is to dance for the hero. And if the script and her role isn’t good enough, she doesn’t hesitate to refuse even the biggest superstar of the country.

When Vidya refused the Rajnikant-starrer ‘Rana’ a few months ago, people sniggered that she had made a big mistake. After all, which actress would say no to a Rajni-starrer which always sets new records at the BO?
But Vidya recently revealed why she refused ‘Rana’. “The makers of the film spoke to me about it, but I wasn’t exactly in serious talks. Later, when I asked for a script, I didn’t get any.”

When ‘The Dirty Picture’ actress was asked to clarify whether she had been asked to sign the movie offer without reading the script she said, “I don’t know what to say or how to explain it. They just didn’t call me back. And how can I take the next step without a script?”

‘Rana’s’ director K S Ravikumar confirmed this news. “Yes, Vidya was also contacted. But since our script wasn’t ready by then, we couldn’t hand it over to her. And by the time the story was locked, it had gone onto a completely different tangent. So, there was no point in sending the script to her.”

‘Rana’, which now stars Deepika Paduknow, seems jinxed. The film has been practically shelved due to Rajni’s ill-health. Moreover, the 63-year-old actor has also committed himself to his daughter Soundarya’s 3D film ‘Kochadaiyaan’ which is touted to be a prequel to ‘Rana.’

As for Vidya, after the super success of ‘The Dirty Pictures’ she wouldn’t be ruing the loss of ‘Rana’ for sure!
