Emraan: I put my blinders on while choosing films

Friday 6 January 2012

For someone who grew from being an antagonist in his debut film FOOTPATH to playing a key protagonist in each of his films, Emraan has indeed come a long way in his eight year long career so far. With his films now doing consistently well across the length and breadth of the country with a superb reach across the interiors, especially in single screen theatres, Emraan has pretty much earned another tag that goes as 'Hitman' Hashmi.

Smiles Emraan, "Really, I don't want to be addressed in any way by the industry or media. I would just want to continue endearing the audience and give blockbusters. People anyways have their own ways to perceive a star by hailing him a superstar one day and then bringing him down by calling him a fluke. I know what I am doing and that is what that really matters."

Meanwhile, there have been some voices though those are now wondering if Emraan has firmly and squarely decided to expand his horizon outside the Bhatt camp, now that he has tasted success with Ekta Kapoor and has been signed for more films with her.

Emraan says in a matter of fact tone, "Well, I was never bothered even earlier and so is the case today. It was always about great scripts. It was never a consideration whether it was Bhatts or an outside filmmaker. I know that eventually a good act always gets credited by the industry and you can see that yourself. Other than that detractors would always end up saying that 'yeh picture iski wajah se chali ya uski wajah se'. However, as always, I will always put my blinders on and do films that I really want to work. Nothing else matters."

Emraan's upcoming films in 2012 are JANNAT 2SHANGHAI and RAAZ 3arriving one after another.

Vidya gives a damn to money; loves cinema

Who wouldn't love to take away a heavy paycheque? Where Katrinas, Kareenas, Aishwaryas, etc charge a whopping amount and constantly strive to be the highest paid actor in the industry, here's an actress for whom work is of much more importance than money. Despite giving back-to-back successes like PAA, ISHQIYA, NO ONE KILLED JESSICA and THE DIRTY PICTURE, Vidya has not hiked her fees. When asked to Vidya, the modest actor smilingly said, "I take that as compliment. We all have a distinct and unique space in the industry. I have never thought about just money. For me it's beyond that. The kind of adulation I receive for my films is much more important than money."

"Having said that money is more than welcome, more the merrier," chuckles Vidya.

Now that her career is going great guns everyone's eager to know about Vidya's marriage plans. However, it seems Vidya wants to carry the hangover of success and is in no mood to think about marriage.

"My career is really doing well. Emotionally, Mentally I am into a very happy space by God's grace. I am not thinking of marriage as of now. I do believe in institution of marriage but right now I don't want think about marriage," says Vidya

How Salman, SRK avoided airport rendezvous

How Salman, SRK avoided airport rendezvousSalman booked himself on a later flight back from Dubai to avoid being seen anywhere near Shah Rukh who was also returning from the desert Emirate

Salman and Shah Rukh Khan appear to be in the mood to carry over their enmity into the New Year as well.

Both the stars celebrated New Year's Eve in Dubai but when it was time for them to return to India, Sallu made sure their paths did not cross.

To avoid what could have been an uncomfortable situation for both, the actors arrived in the city separately, two and half-hours apart, much to the disappointment of the shutterbugs waiting at the Mumbai airport.

Says a source, "All the photographers were waiting, expecting both the actors to land together, considering they were coming from Dubai.

However, they were all very surprised when Shah Rukh landed around 1. 30 am and Salman post 3. 30 am. SRK was with his family and Karan Johar and Salman was with Salim Khan, Helen, Malaika, Arbaaz and Arpita. "

They weren't the only Bollywood folk who were arriving from Dubai that morning. Arjun Rampal and Chunkey Pandey's families were back too, but they came in a little before SRK.

The source goes on to add, "There were many flights to Mumbai that night and Salman was intimated that there would be a lot of media presence. "

So he chose to come post everyone else to avoid any confusion. "

This comes close on the heels of the recent report of SRK missing his flight to Patna on purpose after learning that Salman was on the plane as well.

Hrithik Salman war heats up

Hrithik-Salman war heats upApparently, Duggu has refused to attend an awards show for a 'pro-Salman' channel

Hrithik Roshan has apparently refused to attend an awards event because the channel that will telecast it is pro-Salman

The Salman Khan-Hrithik Roshan imbroglio appears to have gone further. Now apparently Duggu is not keen to be part of a film awards ceremony that will be telecast on the channel Sallu hosts a reality show with Sanjay Dutt.

All this while the awards gala was being telecast on the channel on which Hrithik had judged a dance show. As this is the first time that the other broadcaster is telecasting this starry night, it is pulling out all the stops to get A-list stars for it.

Says a source, "It appears that Hrithik is not too keen to be part of the event which will be held later this month. He has been put off by the whole issue of him being pitted against Salman and talk of his closeness to Shah Rukh Khan. "

Adds the source, "He has apparently cited date issues when he could have possibly adjusted then. Also, the fact that he hosted the dance show on the channel that has lost the telecast rights of the awards night may have influenced his decision. "

Recently Hrithik was approached to be the special guest in the house for this weekend's finale of the Salman-Sanju show. Salman who has been off and on present will feature in the last episode shoot in Karjat.

Hrithik, however, preferred to skip the finale stating that he would be unavailable as he would be travelling on that date. Though B- Town buzz is that it had to do with something to do with Salman's presence on the show.

The Hrithik-Salman face-off

Hrithik had got upset with Salman after the latter commented about Hrithik's film Guzaarish. Duggu had taken it upon himself to defend his project.

But Hrithik's appearance at Salman's brother Sohail's birthday bash in December 2010 was a hint that the two stars had let bygones be bygones.

Players Movie Review

PlayersStarring: Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Bipasha Basu, Bobby Deol, Omi Vaidya, Vinod Khanna, Shikander Kher, Johnny Lever

Directors: Abbas-Mastan

Rating: **1/2

They say birds of the same feather flock together: Charlie Mascarenhas (Abhishek Bachchan) and Riya (Bipasha Basu) are partners in conning and daredevil robbery.

As a last gift, Charlie's friend Raj (Aftab Shivdasani) reveals through a CD the possibility of a heist. "Ten thousand crore rupees worth of gold would be transported from Russia to Romania."

Raj warns Charlie that this heist, an improbable feat, is not a one man job. He would need a team to execute it and the only person who can help him put up the team is ace thief Victor Braganza (Vinod Khanna).

Victor assembles the players - Riya, an expert machinist, Bilal Bashir (Sikander Kher), an explosive expert who likes foreign cars, Ronny (Bobby Deol), a magician, and Sunny Mehra (Omi Vaidya), a make-up artist. Naturally, the captain of this team is Charlie Mascarenhas and their goal - The Gold.

In today's age, with the complexity of the internet, the team lacked a hacker. Victor's daughter Naina (Sonam Kapoor) unsuspectingly offers help by suggesting ace hacker, Spider (Nitin Neil Mukesh), to the team.

In the show of one-upmanship, what follows the heist is a game of con and deceit at every moment of the film. For humour, there is MC (Johnny Lever) and his family.

Sleekly made with fine action, crisp razor sharp edits, speeding cars and exciting photography giving you glimpses of scenic Siberia, Amsterdam and New Zealand, the film reminds you of a Bond film.

The leggy babes with leotard and boots, the guys with stubble and leather jackets, the palatial villas, the elongated limousines, the long car chases, the heist on the train - everything looks glossy and out of this world.

The racy background score by Sandeep Shirodkar and the soundtrack by Pritam creates the adrenaline required for a thriller but unfortunately the well-intended choreographed numbers breaks the momentum.

Ravi Yadav's cinematography and Husain Burmawala's editing are worth a mention. Technically, Abbas Mastan have churned out a very fine movie.

Unfortunately, the film delivers without any emotions.

It is evident that the actors have not put their soul to the characters; they have just walked through their roles. And it shows. The glycerine and the pancake take the applause.

Sikander Kher seems to have some promise. In certain scenes, Sonam reminds of Simi Garewal. Vinod Khanna, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Abhishek's performances lack energy.

Omi and Johnny Lever are stereotyped with their comic dialogue delivery. Bipasha has nothing new to offer and Bobby Deol is wasted in the minuscule role.

Touted as the desi version of Hollywood film "The Italian Job", the script sticks to the basic plot but is unable to get into the recesses of its characters.

"Players" is a synthetically made formula thriller. It does not touch you emotionally. But an average watch nonetheless.

75 lakh for a performance? Vidya seems to be in high demand

75 lakh for a performance? Vidya seems to be in high demandBuzz is that the actress is suddenly being sought out by event organisers, offering her Rs 50 to 75 lakh to perform at shows

With the start of the season of awards shows, Vidya Balan's name has appeared on the list of most wanted actresses to perform at these events.

In fact, an industry veteran reveals that till last year, Vidya was never even considered for such shows. Our source points out, "While Vidya is a very good actress, she was far from being the glamour girl.

She was not perceived as 'oomphy' as Kareena, Katrina, Deepika, Priyanka or even Anushka when it comes to performing on stage. "

However, the stupendous success of The Dirty Picture has turned the scales in Vidya's favour.

As our informer says, "Apart from being approached to perform on the 'Ooh la la' and 'Naaka mukka' tracks, she's also being offered a handsome fee, averaging to about Rs 50 lakh per event. "

Mohammed Morani, one of the top event organisers confirms that Vidya is very much in demand this year. "A chartbusting song and a super hit film is what is required of a star for the award functions. "

Declining to talk about the fee that is being offered to Vidya, Morani maintained, "Vidya is getting good money. "

'Pregnant' Vidya Balan says she will definitely marry but not now

`Pregnant` Vidya Balan says she will definitely marry but not nowVidya Balan stepped out in her character's pregnant look for the trailer launch of her next flick, Kahaani, held at a suburban multiplex yesterday.

Though she chose a maternity gown with two sweaters, her footwear - wedges - looked ekdum unsightly. Heavily pregnant women avoid heels, na?

Anyways, she was all dressed up and ready waiting on time for the media to arrive! She was also at her wittiest best.

When asked about not doing item numbers, she said, "Main to item girl play kar chuki hun, number kya cheez hai."

As part of preparing for her preggers character, she would observe her pregnant sister. She also remembered the pregnant walk she and her pals would imitate for fun during her college days.

I'll definitely marry, but not thinking about it now

"My career is going good. I am very happy. Emotionally and mentally I am in a very happy space, by god's grace. I am not thinking about marriage as of now, but I'm sure a right time will come for it also.

I believe in the institution of marriage. I will not ignore it for a longer duration, but yeah, for now, I am keeping it aside. I will definitely get married," said Vidya.

The actress is said to be dating CEO of UTV movies Siddharth Roy Kapoor. Vidya admits it's the greed for good roles that keeps her on her toes.

"I am a very greedy actor. I want to play different people, I want to do different kinds of films. Even if it means that the hero is the protagonist, as long as I have enough to do in the film I am more than happy doing it," the 33-year-old actress said during the launch of the first look of her new film "Kahaani".

"I am very happy with the kind of films being made today and that I am getting a chance to work in them. They are appealing to the audience as well, which is most important. Women-oriented films are being made since years, but it is only today that they are tasting success," Vidya added while sporting a fake baby bump during the launch.

She is not restricting herself to women-oriented films, says the actress who has done films like "Parineeta", "Ishqiya" and "Paa".

"I have not made any boundaries or limitations for myself. I have not dictated myself that if the script is women oriented only then I will work in it or anything. If the film is good, if the role is good I will definitely do it," she said.

First Look: 'Dhak Dhak Girl' and her famous B-town neigbours at Madame Tussauds

First Look: `Dhak Dhak Girl` and her famous B-town neigbours at Madame TussaudsHer statue will be unveiled at the wax museum in London in March

It is now Madhuri Dixit's turn to get 'waxed'. The actress will be part of Madame Tussauds in March. The Bollywood star will be seen draped in a sari with her equally well-known beautiful smile.

For the past several months, her fans had petitioned to include her wax work in London's famed tourist attraction that is famous for recreating celebrites from different fields in wax.

A team of Madame Tussauds sculptors, led by Jethro Crabb, was in Mumbai recently for Madhuri's specifications and measurements to recreate her replica.

The Dhak Dhak star had preferred to maintain a silence about it till the announcement was made by the museum.

The wax house statement states, "The decision to include Madhuri is set to delight Bollywood fans around the world as we are constantly inundated with requests to feature her."

This prompted the actress to admit about her 'double' yesterday. She states, "Madame Tussauds made the announcement and I am confirming it. (I) Will be in London in March to introduce my likeness."

For the actress this is the best New Year gift and has come at a time when she is in the process of making a foothold in Bollywood all over again.

Last year she decided to relocate to Mumbai from US with hubby Dr Shriram Nene and kids Arin and Ryan to pursue her professional aspirations once more.

Other B-Town stars at Madame Tussauds:

Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai

Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan

Mahek Chahal`s brother hits back at false allegationsFrom being linked to Salman Khan to being insulted about her jaw displacement, Mahek Chahal has been hounded by such allegations ever since she entered "Bigg Boss 5" house. However, the actress' brother has now come out in her support, saying all the rumours are "false and baseless".

"Obviously, all these rumours are false and baseless. They don't even make any sense and they sound funny to me," Mahek's brother Vikramjit Chahal said in a statement.

"Mahek on her own will left Norway so that she could make a career for herself in Bollywood, 10 years ago. Even my elder sister has just left Norway to join Mahek in the finale of 'Bigg Boss' and I will be returning to the country on the final day myself."

"All of it is just fake like the people spreading these rumours who can't mind their own business and let others live and be successful in life," he added.

Mahek was voted out of the Colors reality show by her fellow inmates, but returned as a wild card entry. The show, which started off with 13 contestants, has now five inmates - Mahek, Amar Upadhyay, Aakashdeep Saigal, Juhi Parmar and Siddharth Bhardwaj competing for the prize money of Rs.10 million.
