2011: The year of heroines

There was time when there were lesser number of women-centric films being made in Bollywood. However, looking back at the year 2011 it can be well said that the year was clearly a women show. Well, right from the beginning of the year we were treated with some real sensible woman-centric films. With more number of filmmakers taking keen interest to portray women issues it seems the stagnancy for actresses in Bollywood will diminish in the coming years. Here's the list of women oriented movies that were made in 2011.

NO ONE KILLED JESSICA
NO ONE KILLED JESSICA kick-started the year 2011 on a positive note. Based on the real life incident, this out and out female starrer was loved by one and all. Rani's bold and brash portrayal of a Journalist and her frequent hurling of abuses raised many an eyebrows and attracted eyeballs. Vidya was lauded for her non glamourous avatar and intense act. The film was a hit and garnered good acclaim.

TURNING 30
The issues pertaining to a woman entering in her 30s were beautifully portrayed by the first time director Alankrita Shrivastava, a long time assistant to Prakash Jha. Leading lady Gul Panag was highly praised for her brilliant performance as a 30-year old lady, going through the societal pressures that add to the dilemma of a single woman.

Eesha Koppikar could not have asked for a better role than this. Eesha effortlessly performed the role of a traumatized simple woman from a Mumbai slum, who ends up threatening the biggest corridors of power in the matka gambling underworld of the city. The film had all the potential to click at BO but due to poor promotion it missed the bus. This is counted as Eesha's finest performance

Despite of the presence of 7 male leads in the film (actors like Naseeruddin Shah,John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Irrfan Khan, Annu Kapoor) Vishal Bhardwaj's 7 KHOON MAAF was completely a Priyanka Chopra show. The film, despite huge promotions, may not have done well however Priyanka was applauded for her sterling performance.

THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS
Kalki Koechlin, who's always done meaningful cinema, was a part of an unconventional film THAT GIRL IN YELLOW BOOTS. Kalki delivered a nuanced performance as the tumultuous Ruth, who is looking for her her long-lost father, who had abandoned her many years ago. The film won some critical acclaim.

THE DIRTY PICTURE
With Milan Luthria's THE DIRTY PICTURE Vidya Balan broke all the norms and proved that actresses have enough scope in Bollywood, if provided. Though the rigorous and extensive promotion and Vidya's skimpy costumes & dirty adayeindid half the job for the film, it was Vidya Balan's brave portrayal as south siren which did the magic for the film and also earned her enough accolades.
